Options To Unplug Your Shower Or Bathtub Drain

If you find you are standing in water when you’re taking a shower, here are some ways how to unplug a shower or bathtub drain, so you won’t have to take a shower in standing water. If the shower or tub drain is working appropriately, the water will run out as quickly as it comes out the shower head. If not, then you should take care of the problem before you need the services of a plumber. It is much easier to resolve the problem while the drain is only slow and not clogged. As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

The most frequent difficulty with a tub or shower drain is hair accumulation. In that instance, it is essential to take out the hair clog. Remove the strainer and clean it. Sometimes this is all that is needed to unclog the drain. If the drain did not clear, you can try to snag the hair with a wire. A clothes hanger works in a good way for this. Bend a small hook at the end of the wire and insert it into the drain and try to snag the hair, pulling it out of the drain. It adds to the effectiveness by turning the wire while retracting it to pull the hair from the drain.

If the tub drain fails to clear, then you will need a snake to unclog drain. You need a snake with an auger tip. You can use either a hand turned or a power driven snake. A power snake is much more effective. Insert the auger tip into the drain as far as it will go, then start rotating in a clockwise direction only, allowing the auger to drill into the hair clog. Drag the snake out and remove the hair. Repeat the step to check for more hair.
